Members of XDA-developers forum have managed to pushed the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet to its limit using some very clever tinkering.
By modifying Android's Kernel, a senior member called Pershoot managed to overclock the tablet's system on chip, an Nvidia Tegra 2 from 1GHz to 1.4GHz, a 40 per cent improvement.
He provides with the necessary instructions as well as download links but warns that this is merely a preview of what he has been working on.
Some users have reported a significant jump in performance without any apparent glitches. No drop in Wi-Fi connectivity, no random crashes and more importantly no increase in heat dissipation.
Pershoot however did not yet provide with any updates regarding the impact of the overclocking on the tablet's battery life.
The overclock provides with a clue as to how much headroom Nvidia has with the current manufacturing process. The company has already released SoC's clocked at 1.2GHz but that's far from the upper limit of what the Cortex A9 can achieve (2GHz) and less than half what can be expected from the next generation Cortex A15.
The fact that smartphones and tablets are gradually morphing into full-fleged computers means that overclocking attempts are likely to become more common over time.
